Frequently Asked Questions

India has 5 GST slabs: 0% for essential goods like fresh food and milk, 5% for packaged food and transport services, 12% for processed food and some textiles, 18% for most services and electronics, and 28% for luxury items and tobacco. The GST Council revises rates periodically.

For intrastate transactions (buyer and seller in same state), GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) at half the applicable rate each. For interstate transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate. Both result in the same total tax — only the collection mechanism differs.

For reverse GST calculation: GST Amount = Original Price × GST Rate / (100 + GST Rate). Example: For a GST-inclusive price of ₹11,800 at 18% GST — GST = 11800 × 18 / 118 = ₹1,800. Base price = ₹10,000.

ITC allows registered businesses to claim credit for GST paid on purchases, reducing their GST liability on sales. This prevents cascading taxation. ITC is available only when the supplier has filed their GSTR-1 return and uploaded your invoice.

GSTR-1 (outward supplies): monthly by 11th or quarterly by 13th. GSTR-3B (summary return with payment): monthly by 20th or quarterly by 22nd/24th. Annual return GSTR-9: by 31st December of subsequent year.
